child-centred services

The 'child-centred' approach to working with children and young people is recommended as best practice in current Government policy.

Standard 3 of the National Service Framework (NSF) for Children, Young People and Maternity Services gives practical examples of how child-centred services respond to those in their care.

These are services which:

  • consider the 'whole child', not simply the problem or illness being treated
  • treat children as children and young people as young people
  • are concerned with the overall experience for the child and family
  • work with children, young people and parents as partners, to plan and shape services and to develop the workforce
  • integrate and co-ordinate services around the identified needs of the child and family
  • support children and young people to move into the most age-appropriate service at the right time
  • follow best practice in obtaining consent and responding to confidentiality
  • ensure the child is seen and communicated with using their preferred communication method and language
